Modern Family actress dies, aged 55: Elizabeth Pena dead

Elizabeth Pena died on Tuesday of natural causes, aged 55.

Her death came a short illness, and stressed her manager Gina Rugolo.

Born in New Jersey and grew up in New York, and was known Cuban American actress her television and film. Played the mother of Sofia Vergara in the American television series Modern Family.

Pay Steve Levitan, the show co-creator and executive producer, a tribute to Pina on Twitter.

"We were very sad to learn of the death of Elizabeth Pena. Member of our family, will miss it. #RIPElizabethPena" Levitan tweeted.

Pena career spanned four decades. Her film credits include La Pampa, rush hour, down and out in Beverly Hills and Lone Star. She also loaned her voice to the character in The Incredibles Mirage.

She has worked in television programs including law LA, in a dream, Resurrection Blvd and recently appeared drama network Rey St., Matador, who said in a statement that the actress was "a role model, and the performance truly exceptional, and a source of inspiration in every sense of the word."

It survived by her husband, two children, mother and sister.

 

  Pregnant Zoe Saldana also spoke of her grief. "My heart is broken!!! My prayers are with you and your family. We will miss you #ElizabethPena – ZS."

Elizabeth appeared in a number of films including Lone Star and Rush Hour, and was known for her roles in TV shows like Modern Family, in which she played the mother of Sofia Vergara’s character Gloria.

She also lent her voice to The Incredibles and American Dad.
